拉st Thursday I revisited the Magic Pony gallery for the launch of Gary Taxali's Toy Monkey figurine and art exhibit. When I first arrived at a quarter to 7, a modest crowd had already formed in front of the door. Gary had yet to arrive, so I left for a bite to eat. An hour later, the place was packed. Not surprising, considering the gallery's previous turn outs.

Gary's art reminds me of an adorable little boy in overalls and newly shined shoes, giving you a toothy little grin. And as you bend down to pick him up, he twists your ear and punches your face with that grin still intact. And you know what? You can't help but love him anyways.

The art is silly and endearing. Digging deeper, one realizes the content is beyond its years at first glance. Delving into various aspects of popular culture and contemporary society, the little men and animals and seemingly random words grab you in for a closer look and a deeper thought.

Born in India, Gary grew up in Toronto and graduated from the Ontario College of Art. He has worked as an illustrator and educator ever since, with works appearing in everything and on anything. You might recognize a few of his clients: Sony, Time, Newsweek, Converse, and Esquire to name a few. A true artist giving back to his community, Gary has also taught at Sheridan College, OCAD, and various other art institutions.

Go for Gary's work (until June 5th) but check out the gallery's selection of toys, tees, prints, books, and more (many of which are limited edition).
