Number Crunch - First Day of School

Back to school! Although summer is not officially over, for the hundreds of thousands of students and teachers returning to their first day of school, it pretty much is.

But just how many people are returning to school after multiple weeks off this summer? I'm a huge fan of charts and stats, so here's a quick look at the figures on the number of students in Toronto.

Over 150,000 students are enrolled in Toronto's four Universities:

That means starting today an additional 100,000 people flood the downtown core near U of T and Ryerson campuses.

我ong the five major colleges in Toronto,Humber Collegeenrolls the most number of students with 72,000 students, the vast majority in their continuing education programs.George Brownis second with 64,000 students. In total, all five colleges educate nearly 275,000 students each year (based on fall 2005 enrollment).

TheToronto District School Board (TDSB)and theToronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB)combine to educate roughly 250,000 elementary school students and 120,000 secondary students while employing nearly 21,000 teachers.

So in total, there are nearly 800,000 students in Toronto alone, not to mention all the staff and administration that goes into the educating... it's a big day for a lot of people! For the rest of us, just another Tuesday.
