City of Toronto doesn't want a new neighbourhood

Toronto is often referred to as a city of neighbourhoods. And it seems like we regularly havenew onesjoining the fray, including the celebratedCanary Districtthat sprung up as a result of the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

In the northwest end of the city, however, residents and city councillors are saying no to a new development at Oak Street and Weston Road that would create a sprawling new residential space.

AsCBC News reports, the owners of Satin Finish Hardwood Floors are trying to change the zoning of a two and a half hectare plot to create 500 residential units and a nursing home. Residents say it would flood local streets with traffic and that existing schools wouldn't be able to deal with the influx of students.

The landowners have a hearing in front of the Ontario Municipal Board in July in the hopes of getting approval for their project. And on November 16, as CBC notes, Toronto'splanning and growth management committeevoted to have the city's solicitor at the OMB hearing in order to put an end to this development proposal.
