Morning Brew: hydro bills on the rise, verdicts in Creba and O'Keefe murder trials, long weekend weather and events, careless smoking to blame in two of last week's fires, globetrotting Giambrone, Leafs win
Hydro bills are on the rise in Toronto, and one firm predicts that by 2011 consumers will bepaying $25 more a monthon average than they do now. A $15 dollar increase is on the immediate horizon, but Aegent Energy Advisors claims that high-priced contracts for nuclear and renewable energy will see costs rise even more next year. Energy and Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid disputed the $25 figure, but failed to offer one of his own.
Two significant murder trials concluded yesterday. Louis Woodcock, 23, and Tyshaun Barnett, 22 have beenfound guilty of manslaughterin the Jane Creba case. Facing second degree murder charges, the verdict came after jurors requested clarification of the timeline of events on the fateful Boxing Day in 2005. Now that the trial has concluded, the Starhas published an in-depth account of witnessShurlon Trotman's testimony, who describes the events of that day in detail.
Verdicts were also returned in the John O'Keefe murder trial. Edward Paredes, 24, was found guilty of second-degree murder and Awet Zekarias, 25, was convicted of manslaughter. O'keefe was killed walking along Yonge St. when a stray bullet struck him in the head.
If you're looking for stuff to do on thisgorgeous long weekendand you've already had a peek at ourRadar, the Sunhasa round up of events--although, to be honest, none of them sound particularly exciting. But, who am I to judge? Perhaps theFIRST Robotics Competition Greater Toronto Regionalwill be a hoot.
In brief:
Careless smoking is beingblamed in two of the fires last Sunday, which killed three people. Fire Chief William Stewart had this to say: "These tragedies were preventable and we in the fire service are devastated. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is that our fire-safety messages do not seem to be getting through to some people."
The Sunlooks into Adam Giambrone's $18,000 travel bill and finds that the TTC chairis quite the globetrotter.
In Sports:
Continuing to establish hope for next season, the Leafs finally solved goaltender Ryan Millerin defeating the Buffalo Sabresfour to two last night. It looks like there's still a possibility they'll avoid giving Boston a lottery pick in this year's draft.
