Morning Brew: The rise and fall of CiRCA, city councillor portraits, Smitherman to participate in fundraiser, local rappers want to make hip hop more positive, Hitchens beats Blair
Rememberwhen CiRCA filled for bankruptcy?A year after its demise, theGlobetakes a look at its rise and fall, and finds thatdebt problems from day oneultimately doomed the club. Toronto may not, however, have seen the last of Peter Gatien, who hopes to open a boutique hotel here in the coming year.
Today'sStarfeaturesa series of portraits of City Council membersin which they pose with an object that reflects "what they're all about." Not a bad idea, really -- but it's hard not to get the impression that these people aren't exactly the most creative bunch. Oh, and given that most of the photos are over-compressed and pixelated, someone should probably brush up on his or her Photoshop skills. It's called "Save for Web & Devices" -- use it.
George Smitherman will participate ina fundraiser to help former mayoral candidates erase their campaign debt, despite the fact that his efforts did not put him in the red. But with Sarah Thomson about $100,000 in the hole, the second place finisher likely feels a responsibility to help his former supporter. "One of the biggest barriers to women in politics are the difficulties on the fundraising side.... I'm going to reach out to my base of people and ask them to give a little bit more to help out Sarah."
Following a rash of shootings in Toronto, a couple of local hip-hop artists and a community activist are calling forthe elimination of lyrics related to guns and violencein rap music. But even they were dubious aboutthe notion that music is responsiblefor the violence they decry.
And Phil Villeneuve is dancing again...this time at the ROM.
