Morning Brew: Doug Ford suggests that schools explore UFC program, the Posted Political Panel thinks Rob Ford should drop his vendetta against the Star, Pan Am Games promise serious gridlock, and should libraries be in the video biz?
Maybe balls can be banned from schools, but Doug Ford seems to think it's okay for kids to use their fists. In an email obtained bythe Star, Ford's office asked a Toronto District School Board trustee tocirculate a brochurepromoting UFC Community Works. The initiative touts "physical fitness" and "development of discipline" under the guidance of UFC officials and fighters, but the sport itself is a dubious one to pursue in public schools even if the brochure doesn't advocate throwing kids in the ring.
Speaking of the UFC...it's coming to town on Saturday (as if you didn't know that). Yes, theACC is hosting UFC 140, and though the venue is smaller than the Rogers Centre (where the last Toronto UFC event was held), the night still promises to be action-packed, including the main event with Jon (Bones) Jones, who's, like, badass.
Nice try, ladies. Canadalost to the U.S. in the first-ever Roller Derby World Cupthat was held in Toronto over the past few days. England beat Australia for the bronze. Since the tourney is the first of its kind, Canada's co-captain, Kayla Wilkins, said it was difficult judging the abilities of their opponents, but they still did a pretty bang-up job.
TheNational Post's Political Panel takes up the Rob Ford vs. the Star fiasco, and as happens once in a while, is mostly in agreement that the mayorshould drop his "silly vendetta"against the paper. What do you think? Does Ford have any ground to stand on here?
Get ready for a perfect storm of gridlock in 2015 when the Pan Am Games arrive in TO. By that time work will be well underway on the Eglinton LRT, which is going to do a number of uptown traffic. And to take care of the rest of the city, Pan Am organizers propose temporary legislation that would allow themto take over lanes on major thoroughfaresto transport athletes and other Games officials. I guess you have to give a little to get a little.
