Morning Brew: Police Chief admits to a significant "inefficiency," Toronto scientists get tatted up, changes coming to Liberty Village?, CFL fines Argos, and grading Rob Ford
At a budget committee meeting yesterday, Chief Bill Blair admitted there aretoo many officers on duty at certain times of the day. With a ten-hour night shift and an eight-hour midnight shift overlapping, that means every 24 hours police are being paid for 28 hours of work. Blair admits the overlap is an "obvious inefficiency."
That 'inefficiency' might explain why councillor Peter Milczyntabled a motionto cut an additional $4.3-million from the proposed $933.7-million Toronto Police Services budget after Blair's meeting concluded. Though Milczyn specified the cuts could come from the force's civilian staff - which really wouldn't help with the shift overlap inefficiency...
Toronto scientists are expressing their love for their amino acids and chemical reactionswith permanent ink. That's right, underneath their lab coats, these geeks are tatted up. There's even a book on the phenomenon behind scientists getting inked with their mathematical passions, Science Ink: Tattoos of the Science Obsessed, which includes three Torontonians. Who knew scientists were so cool?
Will Liberty Village's traffic woes and insularity ever get fixed? There is some hopein the form of a new streetthat's been proposed for the south side of the neighbourhood. It's part ofa number of improvementsto the area that the City is considering, but it's not a guarantee that it'll happen.
