Hot Ticket: Elbow, Wild Beasts, Bobby, John Maus, and Foster the People

Live music picks for WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 28 through SATURDAY OCTOBER 1 2011.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 28 / ELBOW / SOUND ACADEMY / 11 POLSON ST / $50.75 / ALL AGES
Fresh off the release of their fifth album,Build a Rocket Boys!, British alt-rock quintetElbowwill be rolling through the Sound Academy to show off their stuff. Having played together for 20+ years, the band, led by frontman Guy Garvey, has perfected their sound and has gained quite a following. They're already legends in England — come and find out why.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 29 / WILD BEASTS / THE MOD CLUB / 722 COLLEGE ST / $23.13 / 19+
British indie-rock darlingsWild Beastsreceived universal acclaim after the release of their third album,Smother, back in May. With dreamy riffs and an achingly haunting sound, the quartet stands out from the rest of the indie pack. Avant-garde rockers Bobby will offer support.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 30 / JOHN MAUS / THE DRAKE HOTEL / 1150 QUEEN W. / $12 / 19+
The music ofJohn Mauscan best be described as dreamlike — as cliche as that might sound — there's just no better way to put it. In the past, he's worked with Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, perfecting his synth-pop sound that was captured beautifully with the release of his album We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves earlier this year. The intimate setting of the Drake will be an ideal setting for his work.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 1 / FOSTER THE PEOPLE / SOUND ACADEMY / 11 POLSON ST / $33.75 / ALL AGES
It's not every day that a song about a youth consumed by homicidal thoughts becomes a hit single, but that's exactly what happened withFoster the People's"Pumped Up Kicks" (see above). Riding the wave of momentum from the smash-hit and its follow-up, "Helena Beat," the trio from Los Angeles has made its mark in 2011 and will be making a stop in Toronto to perform at the Sound Academy.
