Daft Punk Tribute

Hot Ticket: Com Truise, Daft Punk Tribute, Dwayne Gretzky, Smith Westerns, Machine Head & recently announced concerts

Live music picks for WEDNESDAY JANUARY 25 through TUESDAY JANUARY 31, 2012.

FRIDAY JANUARY 27 / DAFT PUNK TRIBUTE / WRONGBAR / $13 / 19+

In some ways, it's only fitting that one of the greatest Daft Punk cover bands is actually from Toronto.DPTcame together in 2009 at Humber College when nine friends discovered they shared a mutual love of the French duo's music. The group includes a horn section, rhythm section, vocals, and electronics, so as you can imagine, the result is quite different from that of Daft Punk's recorded material. Still, if you find yourself in a dancing mood on Friday night, Wrongbar is the place to be.

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 25 / DWAYNE GRETZKY / DAKOTA TAVERN / $7 / 19+

Dwyane Gretzky— loosely named after, of course, the Great One — is a local cover band. The group plays all the classics: from the Beatles, the Stones, Neil Young, and everything in between. This past summer, the group played a thirteen week residency at the Dakota, with each of their residency night selling out. Their next show at the Dakota is bound to sell out, too, so a visit to check out what the fuss is about might very well just be worth it. At the very least, the packed Dakota should provide some shelter and warmth from our harsh Toronto winter.

FRIDAY JANUARY 27 / SMITH WESTERNS / HORSESHOE TAVERN / $ 15 / 19+

TheSmith Westernshail from Chicago, Illinois. Their most recent album,Dye It Blonde, was awarded the "Best New Music" designation by Pitchfork — for whatever that's worth. Those who miss the glam rock of T. Rex and David Bowie would do well to check this show out.

SATURDAY JANUARY 28 / COM TRUISE / WRONGBAR / $13.50 / 19+

Com Truiseis one of the many stage names of Seth Haley, a talented electronic music producer from Princeton, New Jersey. Haley's music mines a very specific kind of musical nostalgia — the synth laden electronica of the late 80s. And while his music is definitely defined by an ear back to another musical era, something about his music sounds remarkably fresh.

SATURDAY JANUARY 28/ MACHINE HEAD / SOUND ACADEMY / 19+

Metalheads unite. Oakland bandMachine Headcomes to play the Sound Academy this coming Friday. The band is touring in support of their newest album,Unto the Locust, and while the Sound Academy might not be the best venue to see such a influential metal band, the band is sure to melt faces with their guitar wizardry.
